Music: Preludium by Max Richter – Ad Astra , New Fakes by Demdike Stare

This visual animation is inspired by the origins and evolution of language. It is a symbolic and abstract story that reflects on the connection language has to nature, mythology, and existence. During my research what struck me the most was not the emergence of language, which is a fascinating phenomenon, but rather the near extinction of language. The origins of my family name, Watts, stem from the country of Whales (south west Great Britain) where people speak Welsh. And Welsh is a language that is dying out. This is occurring in all parts of the world, especially with native and aboriginal languages. And in today’s digital world many countries with rare dialects favour using english for online activities (websites) and this has repercussions in the language that is spoken. But the biggest warning from all this is the connection between language and nature, and how when plants go extinct, languages follow that fate. So this video animation is just a glimpse into this reality and uses certain texts and words in the research I found.
